Diesel Engine Overheating in the Desert: Root Causes & the Cooling Parts That Fix It

Cooling systems are engineered with headroom — but Saudi summer spends that headroom before the machine does any work. A system that coasts at 60% capacity in Europe runs at 95% here, so any small defect tips it over. That is why overheating is the Kingdom's most common summer complaint, and why the fix is usually cheaper than owners fear.
Diagnose in This Order (Cheapest First)
**Radiator exterior blockage.** Sand, dust and shredded plastic bags blanket cores within weeks. Blow out with compressed air from the fan side outward — at every 250-hour service, not yearly. This alone resolves a third of overheating cases.
**Coolant level and condition.** Rusty or oily coolant transfers heat poorly. If it has been "topped up with water" for two years, its additives are gone and internal scaling has begun.
**Radiator cap.** A two-riyal-class part that raises boiling point by holding pressure. Weak cap, boiling coolant, mystery losses.
**Thermostat.** Stuck half-open causes slow warm-up AND overheating. Cheap, quick to test in a pot of heating water.
**Fan and clutch/drive.** Viscous clutches weaken with age; a fan that freewheels at temperature moves half its rated air.
**Water pump.** Weep-hole staining, wobble in the pulley, or coolant loss without puddles (leaking only when hot). Impeller erosion also silently cuts flow.
**Radiator internal scaling.** After years of hard water top-ups, cores clog internally. Flow testing or infrared scanning reveals dead zones; recoring or replacement follows.
**Head gasket.** Exhaust gases pressurizing the coolant (bubbles in the tank, sweet white smoke) is the diagnosis nobody wants — confirm with a combustion leak test before condemning.
