Industry studies agree on a striking number: 70–80% of hydraulic failures trace back to contaminated or degraded fluid. The pump is usually the messenger that dies first. Main pumps typically serve 5,000–10,000 hours — but only when their warnings are heard. Here are the seven that matter.
The Seven Warning Signs
**Slower cycle times.** The classic first symptom: boom lift or swing takes visibly longer, especially when oil is hot. Internal pump wear leaks flow past worn surfaces before any gauge shows it.
**Whining or growling that rises with RPM.** A healthy pump hums steadily. A high whine often means cavitation — the pump starving for oil through a clogged suction filter or low tank level.
**Loss of power under combined functions.** Digging while swinging exposes weak flow that single functions hide.
**Overheating hydraulics.** Worn pumps convert lost efficiency directly into heat. If your oil runs hotter than usual on the same work, internal leakage is the prime suspect.
**Foamy or milky oil.** Foam signals air ingress at the suction side — a pump killer within weeks. Milkiness means water. Both demand action today, not at the next service.
**Metal glitter in the filter or drain oil.** Bronze or silver particles are pump wear plates and pistons announcing the end. A cut-open filter tells the story cheaply.
**Pressure that will not reach specification.** With a test gauge on the pump port, low standby or relief pressure after valve checks points squarely at the pump.
Confirm Before You Buy Anything
A flow-and-pressure test (any competent Saudi hydraulic shop can do one) distinguishes a worn pump from a stuck relief valve or a bypassing cylinder — parts that cost a tenth of a pump. Diagnosis first, invoice second.
Repair, Rebuild or Replace?
Rebuild kits (pistons, plates, seals) make sense when the housing and shaft are unscored — typically 40–60% of replacement cost. Deep scoring means replacement. Either way, the non-negotiable step: flush the entire system and change every filter, or the new pump inherits the old pump's killer.
