Final Drives & Travel Motors: Maintenance That Prevents 5-Figure Failures

A 20-ton excavator's final drive assembly costs SAR 25,000–60,000 to replace — and needs about SAR 60 of gear oil twice a year to avoid it. No other component on the machine has a maintenance-to-catastrophe ratio like that. Yet final drives fail across Saudi Arabia every week, almost always the same three ways.
The Three Killers
**Old or missing gear oil.** The planetary hub holds a small volume that works brutally hard. It shears down and contaminates fast, and because there is no gauge or warning light, "out of sight" becomes "out of oil"
**Failed floating seals (duo-cone seals).** The pair of polished metal rings with rubber torics that keep oil in and sand out. When they weep, gear oil leaves and slurry enters. A visible oil ring around the hub face is a final warning, not a cosmetic issue
**Motor-side contamination.** The hydraulic travel motor shares its fate with the system's oil cleanliness — pump debris and dirty oil take out motors that never did anything wrong
The Maintenance Discipline
**Check oil level every 250 hours:** park with the drain plug at 6 o'clock, level plug horizontal; oil should sit at the level hole
**Change gear oil every 1,000 hours or yearly** — more often in fine dune sand. Use the specified GL-5 grade
**Read the drained oil:** grey sludge means normal shear; glitter means gear or bearing wear starting; chunks mean stop now and open it
**Clean the hub faces weekly** in sandy conditions — packed sand against the floating seal cooks its rubber torics
**Listen and feel:** a drive that hums, clicks on rotation, or runs hotter than its twin is asking for inspection
Rebuild or Replace?
Caught early (bearing rumble, seal weep), a rebuild — bearings, floating seals, gaskets — runs 25–40% of a new assembly and any competent shop can do it. Caught late (broken planet gears, cracked housing), replacement usually wins on total cost. Between those points, a teardown quote decides.
