Sizing: The Mistake That Kills Breakers
A breaker must match its carrier. Too heavy and you stress the excavator's boom and hydraulics; too light and operators compensate by prying — the number one killer of breaker tools. Rules of thumb:
20-ton excavator (DX225, ZX200, CAT 320 class): breaker of 1,500–1,800 kg
30-ton class: 2,200–2,800 kg
Backhoe loaders (JCB 3CX class): 300–450 kg
Always verify oil flow and pressure against the breaker's plate — flow decides blow rate, pressure decides blow energy
**Tool bushings (front cover bushes)** — replace before slack grows, or the piston takes misaligned strikes
**Seal kits** — every 600–800 working hours in Saudi heat, sooner if oil runs hot
**Diaphragm/accumulator bladder** — loses nitrogen slowly; weak charge equals weak blows and hot oil
**Through bolts** — retorque on schedule; a snapped tie rod destroys housings
Maintenance That Doubles Breaker Life
Grease the tool every 2 hours of breaking — with chisel paste, not general grease
Never blank-fire: hammering without material contact hammers the breaker itself
Limit each spot to 15–30 seconds; if it does not break, reposition
Check nitrogen charge monthly, and always after seal changes
Keep hydraulic oil below 80°C — an oil cooler check is breaker maintenance too
