Lubricants are 2–3% of a fleet's operating cost and determine perhaps 40% of its mechanical lifespan. In Saudi Arabia the selection rules differ from the manuals' European and North American assumptions in specific, predictable ways.
Engine Oil: Viscosity for Heat
Most OEM manuals list 15W-40 as the default heavy-duty diesel grade, and in KSA it remains the workhorse — but check the high-ambient columns in your manual: many OEMs approve 20W-50 for sustained operation above 40°C, and it holds oil pressure noticeably better in July. What matters more than viscosity:
Hydraulic Oil: The Big Saudi Difference
Standard ISO VG 46 hydraulic oil, chosen for temperate climates, thins out in Saudi summer systems running 90°C+ tank temperatures — pumps lose volumetric efficiency, and you feel it as a "tired" machine in the afternoon. Most OEMs approve ISO VG 68 for high ambient; some fleets run VG 68 year-round in the Kingdom with better results. If your machine works hard after 11 a.m. in summer, ask us about the switch. Also non-negotiable: keep it clean. Heat plus contamination is the pump-killer combination.
Gear Oil and Final Drives
GL-5 85W-140 handles Saudi heat better than 80W-90 in most final drives, axles, and swing gearboxes — again, check the high-ambient table. Change on schedule; gear oil failure is silent until it is very expensive.
Grease: Stay-Put Ability Beats Everything
For pins, bushings, and slew bearings, use lithium-complex NLGI 2 grease with a dropping point above 260°C. Cheap lithium grease liquefies and runs out of hot joints, leaving bare metal under load — you see the black stains on the boom and pay for it in pin kits. Moly-fortified (3–5% MoS2) grease is worth it for pins and GET linkages under shock loads.
Storage: Where Good Oil Goes Bad
Drums stored in open yards breathe with day-night temperature swings and inhale humid or dusty air. Store lubricants shaded, sealed, and on their side or with drum covers; dispense through filtered transfer equipment. Contaminated new oil is a silent, common cause of "unexplained" hydraulic failures.
